In 2013 (the latest figures) there was 14,196(source: FBI) murders in the U.S.
The same year there was 41,149 suicides in the U.S.
Right from the start, you are 3 times more likely to kill yourself than to be murdered by someone else.
The last year percentages were taken (1988) about the break down of murder by perpetrator, the break down went as follows. I imagine the percentages stay roughly the same year to year.
Murder by family member 16% (spousal 6.5%)
Murder by friend or acquaintance 64%
Murder by stranger 20%
Stranger danger? Not so much.
When we look at suicides, there is one group that stands out. Current and former military personnel account for roughly 8,000 of the 41,149 suicides. Current and former military personnel make up only roughly 2% of the population yet account for nearly 20% of total suicides. So if you’re thinking about joining the military, self loathing and a high probability of suicide awaits.
Putting murder into perspective, there are 330 million people in the U.S. and 14,196 murders per year. That translates to just over 4 per 100,000 people. Translated to a percentage it comes to .004% probability of you being murdered in any given year. To calculate that over a 100 year lifespan we move the decimal point two places to the right. In your lifetime the odds of you being murdered is .4%.
Every murder is tragic, but the odds of it happening is so low it’s not something to worry about. Government has almost no effect on keeping murder rates low, but it has a huge effect on making the murder rate high as I’ll show later in this article.
The government murder solving rate is very low. Within the first year of a murder, their solve rate is around 30% (U.S.). These are the simple ones. A crime of passion and the murderer is still standing over the dead body in shock with the murder weapon in hand. No CSI going on here, it’s more like Agent Maxwell Smart of Get Smart on the case. After 5 years the solve rate moves up to 60% which is the highest percentage the government ever achieves. Why the increase after years? Two most common reasons, confession and private investigation. People have guilty consciences and can’t resist confessing their crime. Private investigators are hired when police have given up. Government clears the books but confessions and PI’s are the main case solvers.
I was looking through the headlines at the HuffPo the other day. I do this to see what the left wing statists are reading and, by default, being programmed to think. I came across a headline. paraphrased: 86 daily deaths in the U.S. due to violent gun culture. Blood beginning to boil. I know it’s a lie, propaganda, but I have to read what the shithead has written. Subsequently a similar article appears a couple days later. Both articles were anti-gun hatchet jobs. First I whip out my calculator. We know the latest figures on murders in the U.S. is 14,196. Divided by 365 days equals 39 murders per day in the U.S. Not all are committed by guns. Guns being the murder weapon of choice in the U.S. is about 60%. So nowhere near the 86 the author is claiming. Reading on he has included suicide with a gun in his figures. So now I understand this lying disingenuous asshole. Did he think no one was actually going to read the article and just believe the headline? Does he think committing suicide with a gun is the equivalent of violent gun culture, or is he just trying to pad the numbers to sell his bullshit? Is he really so stupid to think that someone hell bent on killing themselves will just give up if they can’t get a hold of a gun?

I mean who’s the bigger moron, the writer or the people who believe the writer. The article had thousands of likes and comments.
These sensational stories about violence in the U.S. are exaggerated. Obviously. The murder rate is low. There’s no gun fights in the streets with blood flooding the storm drains. Let’s look at the murder rate by country to see where the U.S. fits in.
Out of 218 countries/territories the U.S. ranks 111. So pretty much fiddle in the middle.
This made me curious. What is the reason for varying murder rates through out the world? The high is Honduras with 90 murders per 100,000 and Lichtenstein and Monaco the lowest with 0 murders per 100,000 and the U.S. at 4.7 murders per 100,000 (the reporting year(s)).
Could guns have something to do with it? I’m not above and often do analyze my beliefs to get to the truth of things so I’m not just another shithead like the indoctrinated statist shitheads I insult.
After investigating, I’ve reached the conclusion that private gun ownership and/or gun laws have little or nothing to do with a countries overall murder rate. Population size doesn’t appear to have an effect either.
For example In China guns are for the most part outlawed to citizens with a murder rate of 1 per 100,000. Gun ownership is heavily restricted in Australia and the UK both with 1 murder per 100,000. Then you look at Switzerland with 0.6 murders per 100,000 where the people are practically required to own guns. In Japan owning firearms is allowed with a license and their murder rate is 0.3 per 100,000. Further down to Lichtenstein and Monaco where there are 0 murders per 100,000 both jurisdictions allow private gun ownership and open carry.
The U.S. has varying degrees of gun regulation depending on what state you’re in. The U.S. is in the middle with 4.7 murders per 100,000. North Korea is also in the middle with 5.2 murders per 100,000 with guns for private citizens being completely outlawed.
In high murder rate jurisdictions gun laws vary from being outlawed and/or heavily restricted to being legal and guaranteed by constitution.
I’m not just cherry picking data. Whether high, medium, or low murder rates there are countries that have very strict gun laws and countries that have unrestrictive gun laws. There appears to be no correlation.
From looking through the data it appears that the two highest contributing factors towards a high murder rate are poverty and the extent of a countries involvement in the international black market drug trade. It’s a general trend, not an absolute scale. Minor factors may account for the few outliers.

Here is where government contributes to a high murder rate. Free markets create wealth and growth. The less economic freedom a country has, i.e. the more socialist, the more poor it will be or become. The second factor is black markets. The combination of high poverty and black markets creates the environment for a high murder rate.

I can hear it now. What about Sweden? They’re socialist and they’re not poor or have a high murder rate. Not all socialism is created the same. You’re not taking into account Sweden used to be a free market economy and became very wealthy because of it. It wasn’t until the 1970’s when Sweden really descended into socialism. When a country is wealthy prior to turning socialist, it takes much longer for the socialism to destroy the country.
Think of it like this. You work and save and invest until you’ve got yourself a nest egg of one million dollars. You then quit your job and produce no more income. If you lived on $50,000 dollars a year, it would take you 20 years to blow through your nest egg while living a seemingly well off lifestyle. You’re not producing you’re just living off of your previous production.
This is what seemingly well off socialist countries are doing. They are just consuming their previous production while producing just enough to slow down the rate of blowing through their savings. Depending on the level of socialism in the country determines the rate of decay. Most socialist countries in south and central America never had the previous production of free markets which is why they are already living in a socialist nightmare. Argentina followed the Sweden path. They used to be free and got rich and then became socialist and are falling fast. Their murder rate is 5.5 per 100,000. The U.S. is following the same path. The U.S. is falling like a rock on economic freedom scales.
Watching countries rise and fall based on their government’s level of involvement in the economy is as predictable as the tides.
A word on Honduras high murder rate. It’s high. At 90 murders per 100,000 the chance of being murdered in any given year is .09%. So still not very likely, but when you translate that out over a lifetime, if the murder rate remained that high there would be a 9% chance of being murdered in a 100 year lifetime. That’s huge.
This is nothing short of government caused hell.
Honduran politicians if you’re reading this and you’re not all sadistic psychopaths, free your people. Free the markets, legalize all black markets, eliminate all taxes. If you did these things, the situation would improve overnight. Do you want to be prosperous? Eliminate all immigration and emigration laws. Allow people to become citizens in one day by making a simple declaration.
If you did these things, people from all over the world would flock to your country to be free. Once there, they would build factories and grocery stores and shopping malls and high rise apartments and resorts and businesses of every kind. They would improve the water, electric and sewer systems. The current Honduran citizens being free would also do these things. In a single decade your country would go from being one of the poorest in the world to one of the most prosperous. These things are achieved from freedom, not government decree.
Legalizing black markets is not a scary thing. Look at Portugal, they legalized all drugs and the results were nothing short of amazing. All positive.
